Grow from seed as bedding plants. pinch out the tops to make them branch at about 3 inches high. Plant individual plants about six inches apart.

I used to grow and plant them for a neighbour, about 45 years ago. I raised them and planted them, and got a penny each for them. (a shilling a dozen ). You get a lot more in and six inches apart, but you get a better effect.

Most bedding plants respond to pinching. I see dwarf french marigolds for sale at the moment, with one central flower, and I just want to cut them all off.

  • hi - thanks so much for the ID.

This was one of my best and earliest gardening successes. I remember now that it was a packet of seeds and i think i just sowed the whole packet and walked away.  I didnt have a greenhouse or cold frame or anything. This clump flowered for much of summer so i was very pleased with the results.

I will try go and get myself some clarkia/goditia and try it again. I have a lot of bits of sad bare garden and have been dismayed at the cost of potted plants in the garden centers. I need to get organised and stop spending £££. I have a greenhouse on the way so hopefully will be much better.

  • oh - i probably watered them with miracle grow!
