This year I've just plonked canes in the soil at various spots so that the cat doesn't physically have room to squat. Seems to have worked. In the past I've also put broken up mints (the packets of sweets) around the garden. That worked too.
I've also got a dog, though that's a pretty extreme method of keeping cats away (and some cats are really cocky, just sit on the wall and stare at him to wind him up). Though he is better than a cat for deterring mice.
