Cats in my garden

We have created a small patch where we have planted onions and tomatoes however the neighbours cat keep uses the bags as its toilet. How do we prevent this please?

Hi Angegibb, This is a well discussed topic on the forum (another £1 for your piggy bank Hosta) and quite a controversial one.  If you type Cats in the search box lots of threads will come up and you can check out the advice given.  I've come to the conclusion that not much works really but maybe something will work for you.

If it's only a small area using chicken wire or similar as a cage over it might do the job.  I'm afraid the suggestions of shotguns and flame throwers don't go down well with some on the board.image

If it is a small area I have found it effective to lay prunings 2 to 3 ft long of thorny or very twiggy bushes on the soil surface.

Great thanks for the replies, I've hit some chicken wire over at the minute but sneaky cat seems to be getting under somewhere, will try the thorny prunings as we have a gorse bush in front garden and loads of roses. Thank you for the suggestions image

I think gorse will certainly give the cat pause for thought image

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Get yourself a cat, they're fiercely territorial!

In all truth I think about the best you can do is provide them somewhere to do their business (sand, woodchips, or freshly turned soil even).

Good luck.  It's a pain in the generals dealing with other people's muck but it does fertilise your flowers!
