Clematis advice please

Lorna95Lorna95 Posts: 436

I bought a clematis montana grandiflora and montana broughton star today, they are in a 2 litre pot. Should I plant these out now or should I wait till it warms up abit.

I have other clematis in the garden which I planted last year, do I need to give them a feed of any sort if so what do I give them and when do I give it to them.

Thank you for all your help.image

    Hi Lorna

Yes , you can plant them out now. They requires a good quality fertile, well drained like most clematis. Plant them deeper than their existing plant pot depth and mix in quality compost and fish blood and bone fertiliser. Water well at least once a week.

They prefer their roots in shade and there stems in the sun. Montanas are very hardy and will take part shade quite well

Thank you greenfingers steve. I will get them planted out. Will have to get some more blood fish and bone tomorrow, no more left. Should I feed it something like tomato feed during the growing season.

I have found Montana to be tough as old boots, as they say and it doesn't seem to mind my clay.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

No need for tomato food Lorna  - their flowering season is now, and that's what tom food is for  image

Prep the planting hole well as steve says, ie compost and B,F&B mixed in, and pop them in. A mulch after watering is beneficial.  They don't need much attention other than training new growth where you want it. They can be slow to start off with, but once they find their feet they romp away.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Broughton Star........best of the montanas..........in my opinion.
