You are right about the pension. I would have retired at 55 as a fire fighter instead I left at 58 from the job I did have. I am mindful that I am fortunate to be able to retire at 58 but always remember "you never get time back "

My next door neighbour is a firefighter Steve and he was once called out to a fire in his own street. Turned out he had to put out his own fence that my husband had burnt down image

I think Lou's husband should get together with Nin and get rid of that dreaded red shedimage

Same here. When I took my early retirement from work it felt as if a heavy stress monkey had been removed from my back. I have never regreted the decision to retire early and take up gardening as a living.

Retired from special needs teaching and now working as special needs classroom assistant. Same job satisfaction, less money but no meetings, paperwork and red tape image

Also trying to earn a bit of pocket money selling my art work image

TheHappyGrower, thank you for all this, it's really, really helpful! I'd already cottoned on to the "no freebies" thing, people don't value your work if they get it for (next to) nothing, no matter how good it is. Regarding recognition, well, I don't care about that. I care about doing the best job I can and about paying my mortgage! image

Now I'll have to think about my usp - I guess I'll ask friends about it, because this is something that's difficult to see in your own work.

Thanks again, I'm very encouraged by your reply! image

Glad i could help a little image

& yes paying your bills is important but recognition is vital to get know thus enabling you to command the right fees for your work

& there will be a lot of nay sayers doom & gloom merchants but the important thing is to remain determined & passionate about what you love & if you really want doors to open you will make them open with your gusto & copious amounts of energy image

btw have you a web site of your images i could have a look at?

& here is my link for you to have a look at

I have just retired 58 should of been a few years ago but had a project that I was ask to stay and see completed.

I loved my job and travelled the world for nearly forty years as part of it, some would say I missed out on other parts of life never been married or had kids but my family is all the people I got to know over the years and are now firm friends.

Not sure I want to do anything just now, I have a new home and jungle that I hope will become a garden in time so just for now I'm content thank you.
