You could just try it and shade the pot as you suggested. As long as you never let it dry out it shouldn't die but if it doesn't seem happy you can always remove it from the pot and plant near one of the walls.

Hefty - if you like sweet peas, why not put some canes in your nice glazed pot and grow those, and you can put the pot anywhere suitable then. The clems will be much happier in the ground anyway - one on each wall as Bob says
If you do want a clematis in your pot - there are varieties which will be ok but check out one of the specialist sites ( we all love recommending Taylor's) for a suitable one. The alpinas might be ok long term - is it a bit dark where you currently have the pot though?

Hefty, I have several clematis in pots and they are all doing really well, they do need to be fairly deep though. If you check out www.taylorsclematis.co.uk you can find out which will grow well in pots. There are some lovely patio varieties that only grow about 4 ft and repeat flower.

ah yeah i didnt think of using a plastic one.........ill check that out
or (as with many things in gardening) ill just plant it in the pot (with some shade) and see what happens

great well its my first time with clematis, i have a jasmine growing nicely, so im excited to see how they turn out
