Planting 2 Clematis in the same container?

HeftyHefty Posts: 370

i bought these 2 clematis today, i have the container and trellis ready, they both flower at different times, so can i plant them both in the same container? or will they just get all tangled and b impossible to prune etc?

I don't think they are the same pruning group- I have cirrhosa and it only gets a tidy .

The other I think needs vigorous pruning in spring- but double check that.

Plus, I think you'd need a bigger pot to accommodate both.

Actually , the president doesn't need hard pruning- you just trim back to a framework in spring and after flowering.

Freckles is an evergreen Group 1 (no pruning needed) and The President is a deciduous Group 2 (prune back to a pair of buds in early spring) so you will be able to tell which is which as the large flowered one will have no leaves when it is time to prune.  However, my experience with Freckles is that it is a bit of a thug and may swamp the other one, making it difficult to see the stems of  The President so making pruning a real hassle.  You can prune Group 1 types to try and keep them under control though.

However, I think the main issue is that the pot is probably too small for both and even just one of them may struggle.  If you want an evergreen feature then plant Freckles otherwise The President, but I wouldn't risk both.

Get some vine eyes and galvanised wire on the brick wall- perfect climbing place.

Beautiful garden Hefty!  I agree with Darren - that wall is perfect. image  Train them along the wires and you're set.  The President will grow in any aspect - mine is on trellis on an East facing fence and blooms really well.

thanks bob!! much appreciated, just to check, which wall? 1st or 2nd pic?

@aym280 - thats literally the biggest pot i have image could i use it at all? if i plant some low growing plants in the pot also to shade the roots? or plant the clematis deep or mulch or something? i cant afford a bigger container

As you have two, why not both walls! image
