Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a shallow routed climber which can be planted in the below trough, the depth of the trough is 23cm deep.

Thanks

You'd be watering 3 times a day I'm such a restricted soil volume.

    Why not try annual climbers.

Mina lobata is easy from seed and now is the time to start.

Try lining it with something or stick a deep growbag in with extra soil on top to retain a bit of  moisture.

    In London. Keen but lazy.

    Thanks guys...the advice is appreciated.

So to start with, should I be using a deeper planter, say at least 18 inches deep like I would for Clematis? or are there some annual climbers that will do OK in the soil volume of the above trough?

Clematis need a good 50cm deep pot- the deeper the better.

Something like clematis cirrhosa Balearica - but only in a deep pot.

Annual climbers like sweet peas, ipomoea and even runner neans (which were originally grown for decoration) would probably be fine.  I'd go for morning glory - quite a few attractive type of ipomoea around and a good time to sow them inside.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    Thanks once again guys image

Morning Glory looks very pretty, as do the Sweet Peas, so I'll give it some more thought and probably go for a deeper pot/planter.

You'd always be struggling with something like a clematis in a container of that depth Sheps. Sweet peas will be fine.

If you want a clematis, get a decent sized pot to give it a good chance  image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thanks Fairygirl...I have been reading about Clematis liking a deep container, so giving the roots plenty of room to grow into.

As it happens I had planned on planting a Clematis ( Cezanne ) at the bottom of the garden in a large 53cm terracotta container, but I have now changed my mind and decided on having a raised bed built which will measure 16ft x 2ft x 2ft so with 24in of soil to grow into I think the Clematis should be OK.

I will do a bit of reading up on Sweet Peas and see how I get on.

    Thanks for the advice
