    This article says it does. http://homeguides.sfgate.com/dianthus-spreading-plant-68854.html  When I've grown them they form cushions over a foot wide, red thyme is 12" to 18" wide. You plant both 8" - 12" apart, so you would need the same number of plants for both.

    My Dianthus 'Flashing Light' is brilliant red and self seeds happily, as well as spreading into quite a wide mat. It is growing in a sunny, well-drained bed, which is naturally fairly shaly. 'Arctic Fire' is another variety of the same species so probably behaves in a similar way.
