  • I have another nomination for the spiky plant award, poncirus trifoliata. Don't think it would like the shade though!

Hawthorn: looks pretty, grows fastish, wildlife friendly, I have to live with a mahonia. They are vicious and nasty - you need a tetanus jab just to pick of the dead leaves.

Joking? I wish I was...my neighbour has a Mahonia Charity in his garden that mostly grows on my side. The leaves have razors on them. I have gloves but they are no protection. Seriously, I get cut and bleed whenever I try to remove the dead leaves from the soil nearby.

all joking aside, I think all gardeners should ensure their tetanus jab is up to date

    Devon.

My GP told me they don't offer tetanus jabs any more and if I'd already had one or two boosters I was protected for life - not sure if I believe them though and would be much happier if I had another jab.

  • Same happened to me at a&e recently when I made a good attempt at removing my thumb with a pruning saw! New guidelines from the WHO apparently.
