I had the same, planted 36, some in pots, some in the wet clay, I've had 12 come up so I'm a bit disappointed and not sure what went wrong. I haven't gone digging up the area to see if the bulbs have rotted yet though.

I've got some seeds germinated in trays of compost stood in a tray of water. Just single, tiny green shoots so far about 10 or so image

I did the same as Fishy65 when mine went to seed last year - scattered a few over a tray of general purpose compost and stuck them in a semi shaded corner, out of view under a big tree.

I didn't think anything was happening but they look like they've germinated and I've got around 30-40 shoots, like blades of grass, popping up now. I'll just leave them to it - maybe transplant them next year as they're a little too delicate looking for now.

  • Does anyone know how long they take to get to flowering size if you grow them from seed?

Sorry it is a side view of my fritillaria that I have grown in between my other spring bulbs in a pot, and with only using Multi purpose compost.

Yes, in the wild they grow in regularly flooded water meadows.

Lily beetles cleared every lily and fritillary grown in all 65 gardens down our road a few years back, nobody grows either now.

  • That's really a shame. We get the little blighters, but I pick them off as best I can. They are probably the only bugs I kill. The rest, even the slugs and snails just get a change of address

Just had a quick look and apparently my tray of seedlings will take another 4-5 years to reach flowering size!

So if they aren't spreading just yet then wait a few more years and don't weed around them too much!  Looks like I'll be filling another tray up with their seeds again this year, and next....and the year after. But in a mere 5 years I'll be planting out a new lot of 30 -40 home grown flowering Snakesheads every year!
