Fritillaria
in Plants
Each year I plant more chequered fritillaria, which I am reliably informed spread and multiply into clumps. Each spring I get one (maybe 2) come up. Any ideas please?

They grow wild in water meadows. They won't like hot and dry. What sort of soil have you got?

mine is a very hot and dry garden - sigh
Not hot and dry for sure. I have clay soil and the area ihave been trying to grow them is quite sunny in summer, but then shaded by many other perennials. The rest of the year, quite the opposite. I thought the bulbs might be rotting in the soil infact.
Perhaps you should mark where you planted the bulbs and then dig up the ones that haven't emerged to see if rot is the problem. Mine are flourishing in an area of clay soil that is wet in winter so that is not definitely the cause. Is the clay impacted and too hard and in need of compost incorporating in it? I have to check my fritillaries daily for lily beetle at this time of year, but they usually arrive well after the plants have emerged.
Well Hello.... 3 more have come up and are now in flower. Not many for the amount of bulbs that have gone in over the years, but better than I thought. Thanks for all the advice. Yes Lily beetles make an appearance in my garden, but usually a bit later than this.
I'm considering getting some, one border is moist for 9 months of the year.
I didn't get mine established properly until I bought a couple of pots of cheap, going to seed plants at the end of season sale. I wonder if they don't like the dried out and packed in bags treatment

I bought the last batch of mine from a stall at a garden show. they were loose bulbs, and I purchased other fritallaria bulbs at the same time, which have never appeared, so perhaps the supplier was naff. I will try buying them in flower in future.
I've had the same issue with bulbs. Planted a packet of 25 last autumn and I got two which are flowering now. I've bought a pot of them from b&q on Sunday for £4 which has a good number of individual flowering plants which are looking healthy. I,'ll plant these up once they've flowered and see how they fair compared to bulbs. Sometimes the bulbs have dried out too much by the time you buy and plant them. They are such lovely flowers
