I sowed some yesterday, no heating, though, they will grow up too quickly and could be weak stemmed. I have orange ones on order, will sow at the end of the month.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

I sowed mine last month, last year I sowed them in April outside but they didn't do very well and the pot marigolds,so this year sowed in conservatory. The only thing I'll have to harden them off which is a painimage
  • My Cosmos Dwarf Sonata were fantastic last year - amazing colour and received favourable comments from family & friends. I think I ought to pinch the tops of the seedlings as they are now about 3" tall and look very healthy - grown in cold GH. Now I have just read your comment Mollis - re;pinching out - what do other Cosmos growers do - the plants can become very leggy and easily blow over in strong winds

  • Yes, I think they would be bushier if pinched out hollie hock - the tall ones are just too tall with all the wind we get around our garden so I am growing a Dwarf Mixed - pink/mauve/white this year.

i started a thread on this yesterday! sowed mine 10 days ago, around 40% germination and what's germinated are leggy and not looking great, will sow more in a couple of weeks and some direct, paying for my impatience

I'm growing a different one this year called Antiquity. But sometimes I wonder why I bother, they don't seem to like the hot dry summers in Dordogne.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • What beautiful flowers - these look lovely so I wouldn't be unhappy with them Busy-Lizzie - I always think it pays to be nosy - see what you neighbours are growing to give you ideas of what grows well in your area - I only remember recognizing Geraniums when we have visited France although I am sure that they grow plenty of other plants too - just that the geraniums stand out because of the striking red flowers and the fact that everyone in France seemed to have a tub or window box of them.

They look lovely Busy Lizzie image

I grew Cranberry Click last year, really disappointed with them. I have my usual selection this year and some do self seed (I'm in the South East so fairly mild).

Guernsey Donkey... just seen you message re pinching out... You don't have to and I never used to, but find that it makes for bushier plants... I usually pinch out when they are 4/6" high.  They will bush up naturally, but especially if they get leggy in the first stages of growth I find it helps..image

Dwarf mix from 2015 - they were stunning - so pleased with them. Thank Mollis - I thought that I should pinch them - but good to get confirmation from you that you usually do too - I will put that little job on my "to do" list for tomorrow.....
