This is a picture of mine today. I think that the plug wrappings they had to be rescued from put them back a bit Are we pruning them back now? All of them?
Hi Sparkles, your plants have certainly had a good growing on top and look very healthy but from what I have been told on this thread in the past, it is all to do with how strong the roots are with clematis (& most other plants too). If you look back you will see my photo of my offer clematis and how I was advised to nip the tops off by a few inches to strengthen the plant - not got an up-to-date picture - however I realize that your plants are not all the same varieties as mine so perhaps they won't compare exactly. My two strongest plants are now in 6 - 8" deep terracotta pots & the roots are just beginning to show through the drainage hole at the bottom of the pots.
These are my four clematis plug plants - two shot up (terracotta pots) & I have nipped the tops of them two or three times now. The two plastic pot clematis haven't grown so tall but are more compact & bushy. I read in the RHS clematis book that I have to wait 2 years before planting them outside, I had intended to put the two taller ones out in July or August - what do others think please?
To establish a good root system Chloe - I have nipped the tops off the two largest a couple of times in the hope that the plants may thicken out and produce more base shoots but this has not happened & they are quite spindly. I am concerned that slugs will attack them if I plant outside before they are study, strong plants

One was super leggy and struggling to support its weight even when tied, so have pinched it back a bit, hope I have done the right thing....
'Ello, 'ello, 'ello, what 'ave we 'ere, then ?
I hope you are all declaring your drawings to HMRC, wouldn't want any fiddlers, would we ?

Hi. They look fairly substantial to me. I would put them all out in the garden. I have planted smaller clematis than that out without any ill effects.

I have clematis 'Cardinal Rouge' in a pot and it must be nearly 3ft tall now. Its grown very fast and has a flower coming. Too early to plant out?
