Clematis plug plant offer - advice needed

  • They look great wakeshine, and as we have been advise can take 2 or 3 years before they are established - mine are growing like mad, but that is because I live further south - and not to say that they will still be thriving in a year or two. I get a lot of pleasure from nuturing plants as I am sure most gardeners do - and to me that is the most important part of gardening.  Thank you for sharing your pictures.

    My clematis today!

    From left (in orange pot):

    Sunset

    Rubens 'Mayleen'

    Cirrhosa 'Jingle Bells'

    Alpina 'Willy'

Now I just need to figure out where to put them all!

  • Sparkles, are those from the 2016 offer?  If so, they have overwintered very well, and will need planting out now.  Only 3 of my original 5 survived, one never got started and one died suddenly last summer (probably too hot in the cold GH). I had a Freckles included in my pack.  I have signed up for another 5 on the recent offer, so I am looking forward to starting the nurturing process all over again soon.

Good luck with your planting out.

Yes, from this time last year!

I thought I'd lost one, but it recovered. I followed the advice on here and kept taking the tops off and potting on and kept them outside in a sheltered spot overwinter. image

  • Living further south and slightly milder (although lacking in sunshine recently) I was able to plant my 3 out last year.  The Montana is slightly pot bound but I did notice some small flower buds on it today.  The other two didn't grow quite so vigorously but are still alive and should also flower later this year.

I have a Montana Mayleen from this offer which is clambering (it's in the bed) and starting to bud.

  • Yes, I think that is the same Montana as the one I received Daisy. I put mine in a pot (I was advised this was o.k.), but it isn't o.k, the leaves seem very small and stunted even though there are small flower buds on the plant. Would you be able to post a photo of yours Daisy?

I'll try tomorrow when I get a mo' GD2, not an awful lot to see though, it's still a bit of a pre-teen.

Hope this photo is OK GD2. I planted it there (it's quite a shady spot) late last year. Unfortunately the cat broke 2 stems so I think I will have to cut this back a bit after it has flowered to get it to bush out a bit more.

  • imageDaisy, your clematis is brilliant - I can see now just how stunted mine is.  Last summer when I planted it out it was bursting with energy and so healthy, but now that it has woken up from it's winter slumber it has produced just tiny leaves and small flower buds, nothing like the size of yours.  I will definitely be moving it once it has flowered and after I have been able to prune it - I just hope it holds out until I can move it. Yes, I think you will have to prune it after flowering and hope that the plant produces more stems. Keep me up-to-date if you can.
