Straight to curved

Lou12Lou12 Posts: 1,149

Ever get the feeling, "Why did I start this"?

I am turning my shade straight edged garden into a curved edged garden as the grass does not grow in the far corner and is just a patchy mess.

It doesn't look right though.

Are there any "rules" for these things?

Try the shape by laying a length of hose on the ground and see what you like.  When you're happy, follow the shape with a half moon spade

And think big sweeping curves, not little wiggles image

Yes definitely (can't find where my husband hid the camera) what i did wrong was to cut the corner out at the bottom, it needed to be on a much larger scale and much rounder.

You know when you cut the corner off a sheet of paper with scissors, well that's what it looked like at first. Now I'm making it more semi-circular and it is much better. Sweeping curves, I like that.

The earth down there though is rich and black and lovely. Despite the grass being very poor the soil looks like the result of decades of leaf mould.

Great idea, I've done it now and I think it looks very nice. It was a horrible dank corner before. I'm going to put in lots of ferns, a camellia, 10 wintergreen, some skimmia, maybe a sarcococca becasue the scent is wonderful and some other plants for shade. It will be much better than before.

It is right in front of the summerhouse which needs some plants in front of it to soften the base edges.
