Well I've just had a really good look at both cuttings.  The flowers are identical apart from the shade of blue/lilac.  They both have stamens coming from the base too.  The difference I can see is that the darker one (Teucrium fruticans) has a cluster of flowers coming from each leaf axil whereas the lighter coloured plant only has one flower from each leaf axil.  The venation pattern on both leaves is identical as is the leaf margin shape.  I agree with both of you, both Teucrium.  I'll see if I can find out more about Teucriums.  Many thanks Verdun and Nutimage

But don't look for another teucrium, they are both T. fruticans.

Have a poke round with google, 'teucrium species', ignore the cultivar names, (those are the ones with capital letters and inverted commas round them). and ignore common names like tree and wall germander.

Thanks Nut. Am I right in thinking I can cut both shrubs back hardish around now?  The darker leaved one is 2m high by 1m wide but messy and bare within.  The lighter one is 2m wide and 1m high and also bare after the first 6 inches.  Few flowers at the mo but otherwise just foliage.  I'd like two neater, much shorter 'hedges/shrubs'.  Many thanks.
