Your first picture is 1 of the macropetalas, possibly Blue Bird, the second picture looks very much like Mrs Cholmondeley, it looks good next to the inula hookeri.
aym, the wind is virtually a constant, but I've got views 20 miles to Dartmoor in one direction, Brent Tor is 35 miles in front of me and Bodmin is about 30 miles on the other side, and from the garden I can't see a single house.

Wendy, this is a tray of clematis ispahanica seedlings I pricked out yesterday into peat with a bit of nitrogen feed in, at this time of year the seedlings should start to grow quickly, most important not to overwater.

aym, I had a gardening business for 25 years in Hampshire before moving to Devon 4 years ago.
Sorry if I've confused things. I know it's hard to " keep tabs" on who's who and what.
Great to see clematis Richard. Only a dozen in my garden. Never enough. Thanks for the pics.
Planted 20 years ago. Cant remember the names .
This is a very interesting thread.
a couple of years ago, I put some seed in a bag of vermiculite, then into the fridge for months.
it did grow slightly, then I put it into a pt, when it died.
Richard where is your Nursery, I live in Manchester.

Another method of propagating clematis is by grafting, here I have grafted onto a vitalba clematis rootstock.
Unlike roses which send suckers up from the rootstock occasionally, with clematis the scion makes its own roots then the vitalba rootstock dies off.
Don't believe me ? Look....
aym, Hampshire is indeed lovely. We needed a break and a change of pace.
My garden in Hants was about 20ft x 40 ft, we've got almost 8 acres here. In Hants that would probably cost Millions.
I don't regret it and will never move house again.
I've tried growing clematis before, and with no success. But I never did it by the bag, maybe that's why! ???????? thank you
