Since you're here hosta, I bought a few of your namesakes today. Good root structure with just a nub of shoot poking through. Planted them out with the shoot tip just below the new surface. Was this ok or should they be higher or lower?
I normally plant the crown just on soil level, so the shoot tip would be a wee big higher than that. In sandy soil it's not an issue, but in heavy clay like mine you don't want them too deep.
I once "lost" a hosta for about 5 years then dug it up about 6" down and it was still alive , just.
I also have long nails and soft hands. I do use handcream - no particular brand - but what I do use is OPI nail envy.
Pretty pricey (around £18.50 per pot) but paint it on like a clear nail varnish, repeat again after two days, again after another two days - then take the lot off and start again!! Each bottle lasts me for ages....and it's a damn sight cheaper than paying for a manicure!!
I do use gloves if I can....but hate them for fiddly stuff, so off they come!
I'd be no bloody good as a gardener if I had someone else's hands. Imagine trying to pot up my daffodils to find that actually these hands belong to my audiologist and the bulbs end up in everyone's ears.

let's hope she didn't read that bit Jimmy.
I'm still breathing. Just.
I've been moving / splitting hostas in the tunnel for 3 days and I've been doing the same as Verdun with the old hand= trowel routine.
I might use a wee bit of hand cream this evening after my bath.
Pompelmo hand and nail cream by The White Company.

Can I be nosy and ask which varieties you bought?

Hmm, I'll probably scrape the soil back a wee bit then. It was a pair of "Big Daddy" hybrids, mainly for ground cover.
Got some Heyland and Whittle gardener's handcream as a Christmas gift - seems to be making a difference, plus it smells lovely
I've found the only way to keep my nails clean for work is to clean the bathroom on a Sunday evening
......no wonder I need handcream
