Good. Day gardeners have just emptied old tomato grow bags (2nd time) and found a good crop new potatoes not quite as good as the Christmas crop but very acceptable will go well with the sprigs of new season mint just showing also pulled some small carrots overwintered under cloches along side 2 Jack Ice lettuce that takes care of easter Sunday menu greenhouse looks bare now but not for long flower plugs arriving soon The Swift &Rocket potatoes going well but don't think 6 weeks this year to harvest will happen all seems to be going well excecpt that every time I go into greenhouse (Snowys living quarters) she's not there she died 2 weeks ago in the summer she would sleep all day in amongst the dahlias so that's where she now rests I do miss her
Yes the onions sets are just pushed into compost in the modules and after a week they start to root very quickly and plant like a plug in April which has worked very good for me past three years.
I plan my allotment every year to enable a full rotation of crops that need it so that disease does not set in on certain beds.
I also use cow manure and compost from the garden to top up beds and add nutrients
Saturday 9th of April have just checked broad beans for black fly and found small pods forming so in the morning will nip out tips and be for lunch i could not resist having a ruttel around the swift potatoes and found some small ones but be patient for a week or two then have another look i hope by then I will have got the know how of how to get pictures by this post next week have to get things ready to receive bedding plugs cut some over winter lettuce yesterday ( Jack Ice) they have done really well this year last Monday sowed Co Co de paimpol beans in 3 in pots already showing it will be a few weeks before planting outside I m hoping I can get them as good as the french Time will tell Good gardening every one
Chris 172. Just seen you pic of spuds chitting on 20-Mar. I've planted out 1st and 2nd earlies (NW), the chits were looking good, purple but were about 2-3 inch high. Going to earth up tomorrow in case of frost.
I've a main crop, still chitting.
How do you store your spuds over winter to keep them looking so good.
Just back from a week away so the garden gets full attention from today for a week or two.
Tatties to plant and plenty seeds to start sowing.
Once i dig any potatoes up i wash them and then grade for quality as in slug damage or other then store them in hessian sacks in my garage however they are kept in total darkness which i have had good results over the past three years.
I also check regular every three weeks for any escapies which may have started to rot but have also been lucky. Once a spud starts to rot you will smell it.
Any potaoes not perfect when dug up are eaten, cooked and frozen or shared with friends and family
