I've just bought some sarpo Mira, I'm told they are an old variety and blight resistant.

KT53 - it depends what variety they are.   For earlies, you want lots of small spuds, so leave most of the shoots on.  Maincrop, take off all but one or two per tuber so you get fewer, bigger ones forming.

Sarpo are v good, in my experience, at resisting blight.  Two years ago, other varieties were felled but they resisted admirably.

That is a lot of spuds, Chris!

  • i also have a bag of spuds with long shoots, maybe 10 spuds, edwards and desiree with 1-2inch shoots

ill maybe remove some and leave a smaller shoot, as per above advise..?

they are still in the bag so maybe i need to get them in light to prevent any rot etc?

is it too early to plant out in bags as yet? still some frosts to come

or plant in shed if seem ready and then move the bag outside later?

I did sarpo Mira at one of my plots last year and was disappointed with the yield, quality and taste. I won't be doing those again. Peatland javelin however was a completely different story and I've got those chitting away as we speak. I'm also doing osprey, rooster and Vivaldi potatoes

I've got Pentland Javs and Charlottes chitting away at the moment. I'm looking for a maincrop variety for a heavy peaty soil in an allotment, which has a fairly high potato malady content due to spuds having been planted there for 80 years. (I do a plot three year rotation - but still...) Any suggestions?

Have Rocket, Maris Piper,King Edwards , all say plant in March, BUT then further down, "after all risk of frost has passed", am in SE near South Downs and sea, but I never consider frost has passed till first week in June what does everyone else do?

Twm - have a look at this site http://www.gardenfocused.co.uk/vegetable/potatoes/variety-desiree.php

for every variety (in the drop down box) there's a graph of various disease resistance etc.    You should be able to select a variety suitable for you from there.

I don't grow potatoes any more, but I always liked Desirée - however my allotment was on improved clay image

I'm doing foremost and charlotte . I'm doing them all in bags in the polytunnel. i found I ignored the allotment last year due to " the knee" so having them closer will make it easier to keep an eye on them.
