  • Just had a fright. ! A frog in the living room ! Took a while to catch it but froggie is now safely back in the garden. Don't know how it got in  though, either one of our cats brought it in or maybe sneaked in through the garage. Does anyone know what size gap they can get through ?

  • Thank so much Daintiness and PeterE17.You have confirmed what I dreaded, I had "red leg" in the 1980's and I found bodies on the lawn. Unfortunately this time there were much more as the frog population had gradually increased.I hope they recover. Thank you again, I am truely blessed to have found this forum image

  • Tracey, probably one of the cats brought it in - ours used to in the old house (they haven't been outside in this garden yet). I'd know if there was a frog in the house if I  came in the front door and found all 4 cats crouched around something in the hall (e.g. a box), staring intently at it with a mixture of curiosity and distaste. Inevitably, when I moved the box I found a frog hiding behind it. I think they can't resist the movement, but then spit it out cos it tastes nasty image. Daisy Doglet has alerted me to the presence of our pond froggie hiding behind flowerpots in our new garden in a similar way image.

Sorry to hear about your losses owing to Red Leg, jatnikapyar image. Hopefully the ones which make it will be resistant and breed to produce stronger offspring

TCM, Tracey, everyone really - did you know that frogs can scream? It's a high-pitched note like a whistling kettle but louder. Obviously it is a defence mechanism that might make the predatory fox or heron or whatever loose its grip and drop it.

It's a frightening sound though if you don't know there's a frog in the room that the cat brought in ...

  • I've heard the frogs in my garden make meowing sounds a bit like a cat.  It was when I was tidying up some of OH's car stuff, and moved a Massive tray he had for emptying oil out into - he'd put it in a corner under the hedge and forgotten about it, I unearthed it (had years of leaf and leaf mould in it), and two huge frogs jumped out and started making the odd meowing noise.  We're trying to tidy the garden up and make it better for the little ones to play in, but we're trying to make places where it's safe for the frogs to hide in whilst we do it.  Some have moved into the paving slabs (piled up on housebricks so they can hide under there), one is hiding in a large shrub in the corner (it's only survived as it has berries on it in the winter for the birds), think it's a cottonester.  Several have gone under the large tree at the bottom of the garden, where I never venture, and there are years and years of leaf litter.  Hope they're all managing to hide, as we've done the bottom third of the garden, and are doing it bit by bit, to give them a chance to get out of our way, and still be safe.

  • Peter E17, You may just have solved  a problem for my neighbour & I. I was saying to her only yesterday that I had heard a strange noise in the back garden the night before last. Hard to explain it really , it was quite repetative, but it was 11pm and I did'nt fancy investigating at that time of night. I will google frog noises !image

Tracey, google 'frog screaming' to get away from their normal croak sounds.

There's a disturbing youtube video from the Netherlands where a frog screams when touched by human or cat - that's the sound I meant. I hope they took away the cat when the film shoot was over and let the frog hop away to safety.

  • The video accompanying text says she did put the frog somewhere safe image Sounded sorta like an old-fashioned kettle coming to the boil image
