We have frogs in our garden too (see my avatar image)  Next door have a couple of ponds - we're thinking of having one as well image

  • I feel very sad reading this post, but I am glad of it and hope someone can help me.I have had a pond with fish for years but NEVER seen what I have seen in the last fortnight. I have had frogs having froglets every year and they have done well coexisting with the fish. Thery were about 15 in all(they used to bask in the sun on the rocks surrounding the pond and thery were babies in various sizes.I asume they were last years and this years' babies. But now, every morning there are up to 4 dead frogs by the pond. I am so upset, the fish are ok so far so it can't be the pond.I hope you will respond with ideas, thank you.image

jatnik that is very sad. I don't know the reason I'm afraid - unless something has leached in which has poisoned the frogs but not the fish? I'm sure someone here will know the answer.

TCM - now that's a lovely pic image

Nut we had the same problem with the main pond there as it was full of sludge and needed some taking out but it was too big and deep to tackle easily and full of wildlife. We did what we could to improve things without upsetting the natural balance. The previous owners overfed the fish so there was a lot of fish 'waste' in there as well, and way too much oxygenator which it didn't really need as it was spring fed. The frogs used to sit on top of it to ...errr...you know what image

My daughter went in (wearing her bikini) with a bucket and she collected quite a lot of blanket weed!

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Jatnik, that is very sad as fairygirl says.

Perhaps your frogs have succumbed to bacterial infection like red leg disease, you can read a little about it here http://www.pondconservation.org.uk/bigponddip/Amphibians+and+reptiles+in+your+pond

It is active in warm weather only and will kill a lot of frogs in a short time I'm afraid.

If it is read leg, bury the corpses to slow down/prevent the disease spreading.

There are a few large ponds near my house (about 100 metres away) and my garden have 4 this year - 7 last, and one Toad. Scare the living day out of me at time when I am weeding and the jump, but welcome none the less.

  •  Just had a fright ! A frog in our living room ! What a job trying to catch it. Did'nt want to harm it just did'nt want it's company whilst watching TVimage.Anyway, mission accomplished  and he/she is back in the garden. ! Don't know how it got it, but guessing one of our cats brought it through cat-flap or it got in under garage door.Does anyone know how small a gap they can get under ?

Hi Jatnikapyar, The following link might help to answer why your frogs have died. It is not uncommon to lose frogs in the summer - sad though it is...
