What/Where have all my snowdrops gone?

  • I planted over 200 in the green a couple of years ago, not that many came through last year and it looks less again this. We back onto fields, so I would imagine its mice and or squirrels image

  • Yes - we back on to fields so I suspect mice.....

Sorry but Snowdrops are poisonous to rabbits and mice so I guess to squirrels too.

  • Something eats quite a lot of my snowdrop flowers, nipping the flower head (but not any of the green parts) neatly off.  I thought they were high in sugars, which could be the appeal maybe - for bank voles, perhaps?

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

The flowers on ours are nibbled by snails, sometimes even before they emerge from the ground too.

Hmmm .... not sure about that - only had about 6 snow drop flowers out of around 250 that were planted - a bit the same with the yellow flower thingy that comes up about the same time - only one appeared - just with foliage.

There are bore holes in both the borders and the grass around 1" across.  A mouse of some sort was found drowned in one of my watering cans (just yesterday)...see pic..

Cant' seem to add a pic - its obviously a lot more tricky than other sites? - none of the above 'icons' seem to offer any help?...It was a long rear legged varmint with pretty large ears is about the best I can offer.

So I figure slugs and mice has been my downfall!!

As I said, whilst vermin might dig under the bulbs, the bulbs themselves are poisonous. So any mouse which ate one would pretty soon die.

I would see if I could find a bulb and see if there was a Narcissus rootfly grub in it.

Some varmints also stole my tulip bulbs from a tub (and obviously from the borders as well) - are they poisonous too?

No, definitely not. We cannot keep tulips here at all, the badgers dig them up and eat them. Squirrels too will take tulips.
