What/Where have all my snowdrops gone?

Planted loads - some in the green but most as bulbs) a couple of years back.... had quite a few come up last year (but not as many as I planted!)

This year just around 6 have come up looking feeble.....

My garden is on the North Cornwall coast - around a 10 minute walk to the beach - we get lots of strong winds and plenty of rain but never water logged.  Beds are mulched and the cornish 'hedges' (walls) are not.  Neither area has produced.  When I walk around locally there are no snow drops in gardens.... and yet I understood snow drops to be able to flourish just about anywhere .... anybody found similar/ Is it down to location?

  • Hmm - what I think I will try is a tub planted only with snowdrops and 'netted' - as a 'test' and see what happens.....

  • Maybe...... just odd to see none whatsoever in my area ..... so maybe not climate - more 'pests'??

About the only pest of Galanthus is Narcissus fly. There are some very nasty fungus and bacterial infections which could wipe out a population, but that is usually very localised ie one garden, but not next door.

I'm 10 miles inland from Bude. Mine are just popping through, so don't lose faith yet.

I always transplant my snowdrop bulbs when they have died down for the summer. As long as they go back in straight away, there is no problem. They don't like being dried out. Is your soil very dry and sandy?

I had a rot/fungus/bacterium seriously reduce one of my patches. It was obvious last year, they just rotted off. Not many under the field maples this year. Not a crisis here but if it were the only patch it would be disappointing

  • OK - thanks for that ..... I'll try keeping the faith - maybe they are just late - yet 6 or more have already come up and finished.... so I'm not holding my breath....

  • Here in Scotland my crocus bulbs were just on the point of flowering when I saw a grey squirrel eating the new shoots. On closer inspection most of the crocus have been demolished. Squirrels did this a few years ago and hadn't been bothered since then apart from yesterday. Does anyone have any tips to stop this destruction please?

    Perhaps squirrels are your problem?
