I've bought a load of 9cm perennials, I've even bought some echinacea, and 100 snodrops in the green, I'm on a roll.  A whole new way of buying plants for me.  With the 9cm pots, I've bought pots the next size up, should I check the roots on the 9cm pots to make sure a healthy root ball on there before moving on.

Such a learning process but I'm very excited about this new way of buying plants.

    Thanks for your advice.

Tetley as for seeds, I manage to cosmos and sweet peas, but they tend to bolt, so have to be tough to survive my poor gardening skills....image

My friend's lupins were completely eaten by lily beetles this summer.

  • This thread made me worry because I bought quite a few 9cm pot perennials from mail order and put them in the ground in the last few months instead of potting them up in a bigger pot image. I thought I heard that they should be put in the ground as soon as possible. Can I still expect them to flower this summer? I went out in the garden this afternoon and worryingly, could not see much sign of life image

  • Thanks Tetley, I do hope so. As you can tell, I'm new to gardening image

You're right about lupins Peanuts, I grow the annual ones every year.

i don't bother to split the perenia type, I just sow seeds every year and after 3 years just replace them. They are very easy from seed.

i always keep small plants in pots until they are big, the little ones pop their shoots up in the Spring and the slugs will nip them off never to be seen again, (that's when most people will complain to the seller) unless you can remember where they are now and in a week or two put some pellets round them.

The slugs are about. Last years delphiniums were sending up good thick shoots. The slugs got em. I've poured crushed eggshells around each one and cleared away leaves. I hope the birds will get on the job soon.

I cleared up a load of leaves two weeks ago, put them in the brown bin, and when I lifted the lid a day later it was like a slug nursery ! Lots of baby ones in there.  That is obviously where they breed.  Reminds me, must go and clear more leaves...
