Problems Storing Wellies

Hello gardeners, I am currently in the process of designing a product that you can store your wellies in for my DT GCSE coursework. For a section of this work, I have to find out people's problems with not having a wellie storage unit.

As you are gardeners, I hope that you will be able to help with this. So, I would greatly appreciate it if you took a minute of your time to tell me about any problems created in your household by not having a wellie storage product.

   Many thanks,

   A student in Year 10

    And did we mention spiders.

We put ours in bin bags and then sling them in the cupboard under the stairs to moulder.

What I'd like is a couple of poles so thay can be stored upside down inside a box that is spider proof outside.

    Yup, it already exists.

We just have a big box on wheels that rolls under shelves in our garage.  It gets all our wellies and outdoor boots.  Not bothered about spiders.   Don't feel the need for a storage gadget.

  • Mine just sit on a plastic tray with a rim inside the porch. They are used several times daily, unless we have a drought, which is almost unheard of in my part of the world. The tray is easy to wash, unlike bags or boxes and I have never seen the point of upsidedown storage as you are always presented with the mucky end. My wellies are in constant use, so no time for spiders to make a home, and they get washed in the duck pond occasionally, but pointless after every use. I need them to nip out and check on lambs, or take the compost out, or dig , or feed the sheep, or work in my bog (and boggy) garden, or shut the hens up if it is bucketing down. They would probably welcome the chance to be 'stored'image

  • We store ours upside down - originally because otherwise the cats used to deposit mic in them. We no longer have cats but it does clear space underneath for shoes so we don't take up so much floor space storing our footwear. I agree that having the mucky end up isn't great though. Maybe an automatic boot-cleaning holder would be a good invention?

I once found a dead mouse in mine which I suspect had escaped from the cat we had at the time. I now put a polystyrene tube in each of the wellingtons and this keeps them upright. The tubing came from some my other half bought to insulate some pipes and this bit was left over. I just cut it in half and it does the job perfectly!image

Have to admit ours tend to be left near the garage door in the gardening season and only get to the box when we stop for winter or have a dry spell in summer.  Then they get washed and stashed - but I also have shorter wellies for summer as I tend to get soil in shoes and I wear flip flops for warm weather gardening.

  • No problems really.  Certainly none that outweigh the usefulness and convenience of wellies.  Ours are in constant use so are stored on a huge black plastic tray with a deep lip in our lobby.  I have put some coconut matting in the bottom so the air circulates.  I wash mine before bringing in - hubby not so diligent!

    We don't have a cat!!

  • Thanks for all your posts it has been a greaty help to me.
