l purchased 3 a couple of years ago, l potted them up in 9cm pots and them grow until they out grew the pot and then planted them in a large container. 2 flowered that year.
If they are that tiny then I think I would pot them on to a deeper pot until grown some more.
Clematis can take a while to get going, but can't tell you how long. I bought one in a small pot, had 2 flowers the first year, then 6 or 7, then lots.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
I am going to try that clematis offer too - but also wondered if they should go out in their first year or grow on in a cold frame - I think they are going to be dispatched to us within the next month so perhaps keep them in for a month or two until the soil warms up a little bit.
They'll be very small and take a year at least to get a decent root system, 9-12cm pot for their first year a cold frame or cool GH till late spring then you can bury them in the pot for summer. In Autumn you can replant them into their permanent position. Don't forget ones a Montana so make sure you have enough room and support for it in place before planting.
You speak as someone who has had experience of clematis Dave. I have tried plug plants before - bedding plants from B&Q last year and they were fantastic - I had 100% success with them.
I got 7 clematis on another offer in gw mag a couple of years ago, they were all tiny, planted all in pots for first year then some went in ground some in big pots last year, all doing ok but only a few flowers so far, guessing they'll get better ( as long as I prune them properly, I have noe idea til they flower which is which, writing wore off labels oops)
Two of the 4 clematis are asleep and look dead - so I will give them time to wake up and see in 6 months or so - the other two have a little growth (a couple of leaves) - none of them have any fresh roots so it is too early to decide what is going to happen (if anything)

Yes Rosie I have. Bedding plants develop much faster, its a good way to buy them, glad they did so well.
Yes I've gone for the Clematis offer too and have successfully grown both plug plants and tiny shrubs in the past. Good advice Dave Morgan.
Any one who went for the Clematis offer - have you received them - were you happy with them?
