sown a few today in kitchen on window sill, some from a homegrown beefsteak tom which kept quite well still juicey i've noticed it's easy to do this from last years toms
I reckon now is about the tme to sow a first speculative batch of toms on the kitchen windowsill. If they get leggy they can be planted deeply later on. Main batch in a few weeks when we have more light.
I've never grown tomatoes from seed before I've always had plants from the grower up the road. This year I bought a couple of packs of "odd" varieties and a couple of the usual. Rightly or wrongly I planted 160 in seed trays with individual cells yesterday and put them in my sunny kitchen window. If it fails at least I can say I tried!
Hi Sophie I normally buy a couple or so plants later on what ever takes my fancy. From seed I normally sow about 10 to 20 seeds in a tray or pot for the windowsill when these have grown to 3 or 4 leaf seedlings I pot them on.
Having enough room for all your plants at the finish stage is something to consider either in the greenhouse or outside, It's the satisfaction of growing your own from seed is most rewarding for me and saving your own seed to use seems more self sufficient and enjoyable. .
Most of mine have poked through with the first two little seed leaves I will pot them on when they have 4 leaves like you say. eventually I plant them out in my garden, my nans, the mother in laws and my nieces. Hence growing from seed this year as trying to save a few pennies to buy a raised bed

Personally I would never sow tomatoes in a cold greenhouse, I always start them with a bit of heat, and then move them into a cold greenhouse in May.
When you don't even know who's in the team

will buy some new variety plants later in year.
All credit to you, Sunnygardner, for seed saving and growing that way, but do you know the name of the beefsteak tom you saved seed from?
If it's an F1, you might get interesting results, but they won't be reliable or predictable.
enjoyed these last yearand kept well on a cut vine.
