Hi Donutsmrs I wish you where our neighbour, I feel a mug coz we look after there house when they go on holiday, and that's normally at the drop of a hat, back at work in the morning but my OH is off until next week so he can keep an eye out : )
  • This is a strange situation Flumpy. Near me there are quite a few properties using stoves and all of them, when first lit, give off smoke. However, once the stove has 'got going' the smoke stops. I know that when you burn logs there is the occasional whiff of wood smoke out doors but nothing that should penetrate to the inside of a house not even connected. The only way a chimney will smoke continuously is if they are burning an unapproved fuel, such as coal or wood outside the moisture content parameters. Another reason could be that they are burning scrap wood with paint or some other treatment applied. This, depending on what the treatment is, could be dangerous. Not only to themselves but to anyone unfortunate enough to breathe the smoke in.

Picking up on a point Dove made, lots of people see a stove as a cheep means of heating a property. Approved fuel is not cheep! A stove is far more expensive to run than most people realise and burning incorrect fuels seems to be the answer for some people.

I hope you get it sorted Flumpy, without the need to fall-out with your neighbour. However, if they're not willing to, at least listen, to your concerns then reporting the situation seems to be the only solution.

  • You might be better off getting in touch with DEFRA. They will give you advise as to what to do and how to go about it. Here is a link to their site Flumpy.

We saw them yesterday carrying wood with bark on them so it looks like they are burning any old wood, I'm hoping our talk yesterday may of made them re-think, not smelt it so far, but there is still time : / thanks for all your support and advice, we really appreciate it, I will keep you all posted: )

Update on the Logburner image, our neighbour text me whilst at work asking if we could smell there fire last night, in which we hadn't, but I said maybe the wind was blowing the other way, anyway ever since we've not heard from them and we've not smelt anything too so we are hoping they have changed there fuel image.

We use kiln dried wood, more expensive but throws out a lot of heat so you do not need as much, it does have bark on so that isn't an indication of the wrong wood being used.  Our chimney is lined and you only get a lovely smell outside hardly any smoke at all.  Hope you get it sorted Flumpy.
