Aha David Matthews2, so that is what Nesta in Bridgend was saying to me all those years ago, I thought she was swearing at me when I told her that as an 18 year old soldier I was far too young to marry, the mystery is solved.
Fairygirl Daughter, hoping you had as good a day as I did with the Grandchildren then later at the party though I must admit I had match sticks holding my eye lids up. For some reason as I talked to my Grandson the story of the Fintry Hills came up. The Army in its wisdom dropped us all over the landscape with orders to fight our way to Carron Bridge. For three days we moved in small groups of those who managed to meet up and were fed and bedded down by wonderful people on farms and in small villages, never saw the so called enemy but managed to get to Carron Bridge where we were found enjoying the local brews and declared victors?? Where are all the others we were asked? Your guess is as good as ours we declared well warmed by the local fire water. we were trucked to a place we knew not where a band had been organised so with drums rolling, pipes skirling we marched into Stirling. And so I discovered the straight talking red headed Scottish girls who could dance the night away. Alas the Army told us to cease the shenanigans A boat awaits in Liverpool Bay to take you to lands far away, brush up your history and your Bible in preparation for your arrival.
Another story. Hope you are escaping this weird weather Fairygirl, we have had nonstop rain my garden is soaking and it is at the top of a hill it normally just goes down to a babbling brook which is now a huge lake.
We had a lovely Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve Frank/Dad, as the girls were at their Dad's yesterday. I had leftovers last night which I enjoyed as it was just reheating
Lots of rain here - as is the norm - but I'm on a hill too so no flooding here, just very soggy. Even the hills lost quite a bit of the autumn snow they had because it turned milder. More happening now though. Hoping to get out tomorrow so I'll see what there is - probably less than when I was out a few weeks ago on Beinn Each over in Callander.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
A belated Harpy Crimbo to all Hope you're all having a great time.
Mine was unexpectedly happy due to a last-minute invitation from my best friends......in whose living room I'm now sitting, after a walk along the flooding River Alt.
Ho, ho, HO! Palaisglide: glad to have cleared up at least one of life's little mysteries (?) for you! [btw: I only 'do' courtesy & road traffic sign Welsh - this modest enclave is known as "Little England beyond Wales" as the proportion of Welsh speakers is particularly low - all down to the Norman domination of South Pembrokeshire ages ago!!]. *You seem to have had a fairly 'adventurous' time whilst enlisted? All the best for the New Year - I hope the surprises turn out to be welcome ones!
And Happy New Year to You Matthew plus all posters on the board,
Blwyddyn Newydd Dda as Bridgend Nesta would have said or at least her Mother the original Welsh Dragon.
Adventure is what you make it and for one who treat Kings and Then Queens regulations in a cavalier fashion the answer was usually promote him and ship him out. Something went amiss with the last two promotions WO2 then WO1 they kept me in the unit, my attitude was always make the best of what you had, no use moaning it gets you nowhere.
My Surprise was my Granddaughter Sarah turning up today with an engagement ring on her finger, wonderful Christmas all round.
Brilliant news, Frank! MrsM & I are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a carload of our decendants from Bedfordshire on 29th inst - it will be our 39th Wedding Anniversary: anything to 'liven up' the mid-Christmastide / New Year slump; we thought it a good idea at the time & it still works well for the pair of us!! May the New Year bring you yet more pleasant surprises...??
