"I'm not being funny or anything but" ... I'm about to say something that could be amazingly offensive if you're not thinking the same as I am about a particular person / thing but I don't want to come across as a bad person so I'm going to pretend I'm acting out of concern.

"Built to our exacting standards" ... In just the same way everything else is built but doesn't it sound like we really care?

"Are you ready for Christmas yet?" I am. I have been since October. But gosh can't I wait to watch you start getting stressed before I rub it in.

  • any sentence with 'but' in it usually means -  i'm about to be this thing but I'm trying to pretend i'm not e.g.

i'm not (insert term here - racist, homophobic, anti-feminist etc.) but......

also bijou, compact or modern feeling in housing means very, very small

  • Jigsaw puzzles marked '3-5 Years' that most kids can complete in under an hour.

  • he/she's a little eccentric - they are as mad a box of frogs, but they're rich so we can't do anything to them

  • no offence - I am about to offend you, but I've said that I don't intend to so you can't get angry at me

'of course I won't tell anyone' - I'm about to take a two page spread out in the local paper and tell EVERYONE!

    i'm fine - i'm not fine

you look fine - you don't look fine - or I can't be bothered to draw my eyes away from what i'm watching on the TV to look at you.

i'll see what I can do - No

i'll let you know - No

quite good - not very good actually

with the greatest respect - you are an idiot!

i'll bear it in mind - i'm going to totally ignore your idea - or pass it off as my own depending on how the boss likes it
