  • Ah ok great! I think I'm going to prune it right back to the ground. So this can be done anytime before spring?

    Yes whilst they're dormant.

    Hi Sam,

It seems a shame to cut it to the ground unless you absolutely have to.

If you could leave about 2m of stems, you'd have something with which to start training when it's relocated.

If you do cut it " to the ground" make sure you don't go below the graft point.

  • Great, thanks!
  • How well would the wisteria cope to being potted do you think?

I have seen some for sale in catalogues grown as sort of standards. Don't know if they are a particular variety or if they are grafted onto something suitable for pots. Are you thinking of moving yours from the ground to a pot? It may depend on how big it is and how big the roots have grown.

  • Yeah I am thinking of moving it into a pot. It's currently in a really bad place, and they have a really, really good place it could go! Such a shame!
  • But the good place is at the back of the garden on decking, so it'd have to be a pot.

If you're going to move it anyway and don't have a suitable place to replant, then I would try it in a (large) pot, (You may have to prune the roots). If that fails you will have a good excuse to try something else.image It would be a shame to lose an established plant though.image

I'd not grow one in a pot less than, say , half barrel size.
