Slugs and snails getting smaller

This year I've got into the habit of taking a large gorilla bucket with me when I'm working in the garden and chucking any snails and slugs I find in there with anything for composting which I then put in a bin which is taken away to be hot composted by my local council. In the last few weeks I have noticed the snails and slugs I'm finding are mostly tiny, does that mean I'm winning or is it just the time of year for baby ones and all the adults are hiding better or have hibernated (do they do that?)

You won't find a policeman down here over 14 years old. I wonder if they are old enough to drive.

Back to slugs, they are not babies, just the type they are, I have some of the biggest  wotsits fat yellow or black ones, they make a real mess when chopped up, but good for the compost.

That is true as well, they are crafty little things, stay out of sight then when you are not looking they come out and gobble up your plants.

Just to show that Continental Europe has a few 'species' we can well do without in our cloistered "insular" gardens! Be afraid, be very afraid: what if they should ever get organised and invade??!!

My garden is home to a healthy amount of frogs and a hedgehog.

It is also home to the biggest slugs you can find! I think once they get to a certain size they get left alone.

    I hope you're winning Flower.

  • Clarington, I think I am, I haven't seen any of those giant slugs for some months and no ordinary sized snails either. I think I know most of their favourite hangouts.I have asked for one of those head torches for Christmas to make night hunting easier too.
