Odd looking plant

It wasn't there yesterday. It looks like a couple of pieces of pipe insulation.

I would guess that it's some type of fungus, I've never seen anything like it before though.

I must be really intreagued as this is the first time that I've asked a question!

help identification assistance would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Is that upside down? i.e. its been knocked over. Can we have a look at the brown bit/top?

Does it smell awful?  In which case it is a stinkhorn, often makes its presence known in hedgerows or on shady banks.

Sorry about the dlay - I was at work.

Hold on I'll nip out and take another photo.

Yes, that one did appear to be inverted.

    PS I'll sniff too

New photo - It appears to have peaked. it's toppled over.

It didn't seem to smell bad until I got too close. It stinks.

I think you might be right Mr. Onion

The brown brown bit seems to have opened/pelled back.

I looked into Stinkhorns - I'm sure that that is what it is. It shoots up then breaks in half and topples over. There is a cracking you tube clip.

    I think it's a Phallus Impudicus - a stinkhorn.

Believe it or not my friend's father used to eat these things at their youngest stage plus a number of equally unappetising looking fungi.

They grow in the woods round our house and smell like a decaying corpse.
