Well, there you are, you see. Your invasive is my survivor. Those anemones have expanded by about five plants in ten years! My Russian vine died in the second winter.... If it lives and grows, I love it!

  • Winter flowering honeysuckle.

Hardy, almost evergreen, healthy and offering fragrant flowers in the depths of winter... but so, so boring to look at for 52 weeks of the year. Mine is coming out.

  • Nice one Tootsietim.  I'll go a bit further and say honeysuckle in general.  Mine grow far too quickly, reaching for the sky and leaving a mess of bare stems for the first 6 feet.  When they are cut back they look good for a season but flowers are then few and far between.  I also realised this year that I hardly even noticed the scent either. Coming out!  I can get in two or three more clematis now. image

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Now I really am shocked! Winter honeysuckle flowers for months and creates a cloud of wonderful scent around itself. It may not look very exciting but it is priceless in winter. And the summer stuff, too - so pretty, such a scent in the evening AND the bees seem to love it. No no, not the honeysuckle!

I have two acubaimage. They are only any  use at Christmas when the birds have stripped my holly.

    In London. Keen but lazy.

They obviously have good taste. The birds not the berries! They never touch mine either so I'm left with some foliage and berries for decoration if I can be bothered to get them

Those plastic box balls and cones shouldn't be allowed to be sold. If you care enough to have a plant at the door, at least have a real one. They're hideous beyond belief image

The plastic ivy I've seen is even worse...what are they thinking? image

I used a Hebe buxifolia to give the same effect as a box ball. Virtually zero maintenance and looked superb all year round, despite being in an unsuitable spot. Lots of these little firs will do the same job very well and 'finish off' a front door.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
