Incomplete pollination is often a problem with sweetcorn. Since it's done by wind, they need to be planted in a block, not a row.
My friend had 24 plants with two cobs on each. She had the pans of water boiling for a corn-on-the-cob-party (I have some unusual friends), went out to cut them and found that mice had eaten every one!
I have grown Swift F1 . Here in the Midlands, we were eating the sweet corn all through September. I sow the seeds under cover in early May, and plant out at the beginning of June.
Hello , I known there are 2 different varieties , one for gardeners and another farmers grow for animal feed , if it is the later they are as hard as bullets even if you boil them for hours , because we have tried
As for mice more than likely rats , had my sweet corn eaten by them for 2 year running at allottment , not bothering next year
Thanks for the info on the board, Dove & Pam - I'll seriously consider it when I have a big enough kitchen.
Good luck with the sweetcorn next year Pam.
Here in Flanders they grow masses of the stuff, which is mostly still standing in the fields even though the foliage is all dead and the fruits must be rock hard. Animal feed? Really?

Squirrels like them too.
Yep. But these were mice. I think she can tell from the tooth marks or something.
If the ends are pointed are they the mini ones which are picked when finger size ?e
Are you only just picking the sweet corn ? What month did it say on the packet to harvest?
More. Than likely been left on the plant too long .I started eating mine in September . They are finished now.
Save a few cobs for seed.
Ok, thanks everyone, will plant in a block next year and try again, [ by the way the pastry board was from Morrisons

Do you know what variety of sweetcorn it was you grew Pam?
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
