We’ve been renovating our house and along with it starting to plan out possible garden layouts. 'Google sketch up' I’ve found to be a great tool for this, there’s version which is completely free. It has an online 3d warehouse which has loads of already made 3d / 2d models which you can upload. With a little time, and using some online tutorials (which there are plenty of) it allows you to see what you layout might look like in real life. Attached are some basic examples which I’ve made up as mainly I have been using for planning the house layout rather than the garden at this stage.
I thought I had made it clear that I already know about pencil and paper but it is software that I want. I'm looking for recommendations of types of software. I really, really don't want to use pencil and paper even if the rest of the world uses it happily.
I've had a very quick play with this one. As far as I can tell it's only 2D, ie plan view, and has general plant and tree shapes. It's certainly an improvement on anything free I've looked at previously, but would require the user to have a pretty good idea of the available plants, their size etc in order for it to be really effective.
I can't remember what the software was I looked at a couple of years ago which included a plant catalogue which was obviously potentially useful. Unfortunately the software itself was poor and was very definitely aimed at the US market judging from the terminology used.

Thanks, Marc
Have you tried it yet? If so, what is the range of plants like?
Making your requirements clear doesn't mean people will necessarily answer the question asked - sadly.
Marc makes a great point about Sketchup. It's free and reasonably easy to use and it's 3D.
I use Autocad for work.
I use Photoshop for quick overlays to see how things will work in the garden (using a photo of the garden as a base).
Fairy , don't you know. If you've got an App, you're an expert. POOF! just like that.
Hosta - after the grief I've had as a result of posting on this thread - I ain't saying nuffink else
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Hi Sharon,
One that I found online is Shoot Gardening. They have a free trial if you want to take a look but haven't tried it yet myself. https://www.shootgardening.co.uk/garden/planner/demo
Let us know if you find a good planner ?
