is it too soon to lift dahlias?

Is it too soon to lift dahlias? I know they should really be left 'till first frosts, but I've been lucky enough to acquire a box load dug up from the park by the council who were going to compost them - is there anything I should be doing with them to increase chances of survival? Any advice appreciated

ditto diblins. Mine were left in , in sandy Hampshire. In North Devon in rain soaked clay soil they'd be gonners .
