is it too soon to lift dahlias?
in Talkback
Is it too soon to lift dahlias? I know they should really be left 'till first frosts, but I've been lucky enough to acquire a box load dug up from the park by the council who were going to compost them - is there anything I should be doing with them to increase chances of survival? Any advice appreciated

still in flower in sunny Devon, but I'd do exactly as Gertie has suggested.
Thank you, they were still in flower. I'm in the south east, Surrey, not particularly cold yet, but will do as you suggest. Thinking about it,
I've probably not much option - so ..... fingers crossed that they will be ok
if they're still in flower, I'd just bunch them together somewhere so the tubers don't dry out and wait for the frost to knock them back.
well done on such a wonderful freeby.
that's a good Idea I'll do that and yes I was very pleased, I'd had my eye on them over the last six weeks and had been hoping I'd catch the council when they dug them up to see what they were going to do with the of lovely flowers on my allotment for cutting next yeat
I leave mine in the ground, but do add a thick mulch.
I used to leave mine in the ground when I lived in the South East (they were planted in quite a sheltered spot and I had lovely free draining soil). Came up year after year, no problems. Moved to Shropshire now with heavy clay soil - have lifted them
