Just thought I'd let you guys know that I've abandoned this project. I started clearing it today and slowly removing rubble when I came across some asbestos. That is something that I'm not about to tangle with so I've decided to move any plans for a veg patch further down the garden, closer to the house.
I did contact them and the stated that it's fine to be left there unless I was planning on unearthing it, which I don't. Apparently it's entirely stable if its left alone. It was also quite deep down too.

Now what to do with the back?
Since you might be loath to enjoy that area of the garden: can you turn it into a wild life friendly area?
Lots of projects here to give you an idea http://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/projects/wildlife-gardening/
You could make a log pile over the area where the asbestos is, to make sure you don't forget and dig it up by mistake.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
