my 1st strawberry patch

  • That's a great patch you've got, and best daddy in the world award for growing something you don't like for your daughter! With all that rain, I've been picking mine every day and removing the mouldy/half eaten ones. If you want a longer harvest, you could replace some and get 2 or 3 more varieties so you have some early, mid, late, some are perpetual (a few strawberries throughout the summer). 20 plants that crop at the same time will make a lot of strawberries, especially if you are not planning to make a lot of jam ?

Your daughter will be your dedicated fruit picker before you know it! I made a deal with my little one. I showed him how to check and pick alpine strawberries and he can eat them in the garden (He has to show me the first ones he picks). They are smaller and lighter so they don't touch the ground plus they go to mush if you try to wash them. He was 2 1/2 at the time and now can even work out if the creamy ones are ripe! We pick the "big" ones together.

Keep us updated with your strawberry plot!

well i had several strawberries from each plant some got too wet etc and slugged

but seems thats it now, i dont see anymore coming as yet so just look after for next year i presume.  its a fight to stop most of the runners though.  maybe ill try let a couple root

a couple seemed to have died off though, maybe too wet or dry, hard to say
