I did mine on a south windowsil in a propergator, seed compost, germinated pretty quickly. I think i got 3 from 5 seeds sown. They grow slowly though, they are in the greenhouse now, 2 just have about 4 leaves now, and 1 has taken off and is about 8" high. Not quite big enough to go into the growbag yet though.
Also remember that once you do get some growing you can lift and store the rhizome like a dahlia and grow them the following year. That way they should get off to a faster start the following season.
I am growing some- the seeds did take ages to germinate and I have jpotted some some into 4"pots - they are romping always now!! I am intending to grow the I in my greenhouse pam LL x
They're big enough to eat when about an inch long. The bigger the better, if you like the taste. The bitterness drops off then they reach full size. They reach full size and sit on the plant for a week or so before dropping off.
I grew them last year out of curiosity but they weren't all that exciting to be honest. They're ok in a G&T but don't offer much.
They were tough to germinate and took a while to fruit in a GH. I didn't sow any this year but dropped fruit have germinated in my GH and are about 2-3ft long and fruiting now. If I needed the space I'd pull them up.
Grew cucamelons with considerable success last year in greenhouse. Three plants growing up through cucumber plants worked a treat. Produced many many fruits. Needed a good network of wire, string and canes as side shoots trail and spread.

iPad made the mistakes - not me
Perhaps I will try again. It may be a bit late but perhaps if they grow I will be able to save the rhizome for next year
