February GW mag says if the worms are in the lid they are stressed, too cold, too hot, too much coffee, citrus or onions, who knew worms were such fussy blighters!
Hello, I have no worms in my dalek but whenever I open the lid, a lot of small flies rise and escape. That itself isn't a problem, but some of them find their way into the house I believe. Does anyone else have small flies in the compost bin? I hope they are harmless??
Probably fruit flies. The eggs are on fruit you compost, and they then hatch. Annoying but harmless.
We have a food digester next to the compost bin (for e.g. cooked food that you can't compost) which is sealed air-tight. That still gets fruit flies inside for the same reason!
Hello , yes I get fruit flies in compost bins , depending on whats gone in , obviously not a problem for us as it is at allotment , I just give it stur with the spade
I had look in my dalek this morning and there was a load of white flies inside ! also there was a good amount of worms about in the first foot of compost . D.D.
But just started emptying a compost bin at least a year old and some coir from hanging baskets had not rotted down , the rest was lovely cumblerly compost

Well if they've overdosed on caffeine they'll be climbing the walls!
