Thanks, people. I think I'll do some further research into coffee grounds. I'll report back if I find out anything interesting.

Hello Daryl12, still waiting to see you (do you have a hamster, I love them) late in this discussion, did you buy the "special" worms? Pippa Greenwood on GW on radio 4 said a few weeks ago, you need to keep them warm in winter, and that she has her compost bin in her porch.  My compost bin has the usual earthworms, and there is always a load in the lid.

No special worms, just the ones that arrive by themselves - reddish and about 2" long.  I had a worm bin many years ago and I moved that to the shed in cold weather but this is an open bottomed Dalek bin so moving it isn't an option. I have heard lots of people mention worms in the lid so I'm not too worried but I would like to be doing the best I can for my little composting army.

Will PM you about meeting up.

  • Hi Daryl2

I shouldn't worry about the worms making a bid for freedom. I have noticed a lot around the lid every time I have opened mine lately. I think they come to the top when it rains - and of course the rain hammers on the lid. They usually settle back down. Sounds like you are doing all the right things with the content.

Thanks GG - that's reassuring. So many different theories around though - it's hard to sort fact from myth and speculation.

I would have thought that having worms means the compost is good

Coffe grinding occasionally I get a bag from a coffee shop and I just mix in with the other compost in the bin and it has been fine , there was a discussion on hear some time ago about coffee grinding and the General opion was it was ok in small amounts image

Thanks GWRS. That's another vote in favour of coffee grounds in the compost image
