Mine were sown two weeks ago in pots and put in the growhouse. They aren't through yet but I wouldn't expect that as we've had fairly cold temps.

I rarely even do that as I usually sow direct in late April -  they grow away  just as quick. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

David K, now that I have coddled them, would you recommend plonking them in the plastic greenhouse day&night straightaway or just during the day for the first few days? Do I need to put slug pellets in the pots? (Plenty of slugs on my patio.)

  • Aster - much depends on the weather and just how warm your windowsill has been. For certain they need to be hardened-off to stop the leggy growth......perhaps put them into your mini greenhouse during the day & bringing them back indoors overnight, for say a week. Then, as I suggested earlier in my message at 17 27.

  • I planted my sweet pea seeds about 4/5 weeks ago into large concrete pots. Two pots of Dwarf explorer mixed & one pot of Sugar & Spice. Both types are suitable for pots, hanging baskets or ground cover so they aren't going to grow up a trelis or cane. The dwarf explorer are far ahead of the sugar 'n; spice and I have pinched them out as they have grown to hopefully produce a dense mass of colour. I have never grown either before.

Will do, David K, thank you very much on behalf of my seedlings! image

  • They're looking healthy, GD.....I see the Sugar & Spice are starting to creep towards the edge of their pot.

Not at all bossy, David. I for one very much appreciate your advice. I'm completely new at this, so all the other instructions I've come across omit information that a more experienced gardener would know but I don't, and that leads to things like coddled seedlings!

  • Yes David - they haven't grown as much as I would have hoped and wonder how they compare with other peoples'? There is 25 seeds in that pot - but I think I may have planted them a little too early - we had so little sunshine for the first 3 or so weeks - & it was cold in our cold GH too. I don't need to pinch them do I?
