Great thread. Thanks David. I haven't grown sweet pea for years but I saw some gorgeous seeds today and now this new thread! Must be a sign! Would Prince of Orange be appropriate for an out of practice beginner? I love the colours. Is it possible to cordon on an obelisk? I have vague memories of attempting that before on bamboo.

  • Flowers in the rain....absolutely no need to soak or chip sweet pea seed. For pots & baskets I would wait until March to sow them.

Plant pauper....Prince of Orange (more like salmon to be precise) will be no more difficult to grow than any other. It has smaller than usual flowers, but more than makes up for having many more and is highly scented.

Yes will okay grown on an obelisk.

  • Thanks David, will follow your advice. May I ask why the difference in sowing times for pot and basket varieties?

No reason why, except that they might just as well be sown in situ, which is less trouble and they will continue to flower into the autumn.

  • OK thanks again

  • It's always a balancing act, but all things considered, I'll probably sow my SP seed over the coming weekend.

  • For the record, the previous thread ('Growing sweet peas 2014/2015') has now been closed.

  • Not sure if anyone is interested, but I've a feeling it may be a cold autumn, so perhaps best get those SP seed germinated while the weather is still favourable.

  • Mine were sown on Saturday so fingers crossed they germinate okay.

Just in case there is still any interest left out there in sweet peas.....here's a basket of them I grew last year.

PS. Seed sown directly into the baskets in March, then kept in a cold greenhouse until hanging outside in May.
