    Hi Daisy,

I think  every  one as special memories when they look out or step out in to their gardens. There a reflection of your life, in my case they sure do bring those memories to the fore. Two special places in my garden are a weeping Japanese cherry which I call the headstone to my best mate final resting place. My Labrador who's name reflected the joy she give to me Rosie was her name.

The second being a Tree Peony which my Daughter picked out last year. That already is beginning to bring out special father /daughter memories for me.

A garden truely is a beautiful place to rest and to heal.

When I was 4 living in Germany, there was a field at the back of our house and this gave me my first plant memory as it was covered in red poppies that were as tall as me. I can still see the colour, smell the grass and see the petals moving. There is so much we forget as we grow up but that memory affected me forever and wherever I live plants and trees have been my saviour. As soon as I was old enough to follow my father around through woods and watch insects climbing around his roses, pinks and dahlias and feel the impact of what gardens can do for you I was out there and could not wait to have my first garden. I have had large and small gardens and no matter what the size, the joy of filling them with plants, birds and insects gives such a sense of achievement and has boosted my confidence no matter what. We poor old humans have little control on what happens in the rest of the world but the pleasure and excitement that comes from developing your own plot and creating even the smallest pocket of beauty is a marvellous thing.

hi all  my comment  is all of above  in the early years when I lost  my first wife it was a god send a place to cry or utter all the oaths   but the garden kept  my feet on ground  ..   that is what my garden means to me     Michael

  • Lovely thread. For me, it's about wildlife. I feel a certain sort of hippy-dippy compulsion to make this little bit of land good for the animals who are otherwise totally overlooked by human concerns. My garden is brand new, but I'll be planting for birds, bees and butterflies while trying not to get too cross with squirrels.

  • There's a spot in my garden that, when we moved in two years ago, was part of a large expanse of bamboo.  Having removed the bamboo, levelled it and turfed it the bench that now lives there is a place to sit in the sun amongst the birds and bees in peace and quiet; to watch my children grow up; to surveil my effort on the rest of the garden and to relax.  There are fewer places on this planet that I've enjoyed as much.

My garden has helped me through really tough times. It helped me distress when I was looking after my mother when she had Alzheimers. Iwas suffering with depression and anxiety at the time . When I went into my garden I was lost in it . It was a therapy for me. I don't think I could have coped so long without it. It was the hardest thing to watch my mum disappear in front of me . It is a really horrible illness and there is nothing you can do to stop it. So my garden saved me from going under at that really sad time. Now when I am out there gardening I think of mum a lot as we both loved being gardeners.

It's a place where one hour becomes four because I just love being in there.and time just goes in to overdrive. It's a place to think of the past, present and future.and how my garden has being enjoyed and welcoming by family and friend

If a place that symbolises a certain level of tranquility and calmness that I would not find in any other place

It's my garden and I love it

Know how you feel Linda. My mum had terminal cancer and my garden became my sanctuary in the brief moments I had alone when I wasn't, working, looking after mum or my young family. A place that for a while allowed me sanctuary from the inevitable.

Funnily enough my mum's own small garden was her sanctuary and she enjoyed bringing flowers in from the garden to enjoy up until she passed away.

In a frantic, sometimes cruel world it's a place to escape the pressures and dream x
