any other arachnaphobes out there?
in Fruit & veg
I try to garden in harmony with wildlife so I'm thrilled my plot is full of harvestmen and spiders, but on a moist September morn ing when it needs mostly clearning, weeding, and mulching ready for chard seeds and shallot sets my arachnophobia can be a bit of a hindrance. Any other sufferers out there? It's even harder now I can't just drag my husband out, he was being napped on by a teething/mmr'd toddler...

Ooooh, bookmonster, My Hubby has always been worse than me,He had Hypnotherapy a few years back (he has multiply phobias) nothing to do with spiders, found he could happily walk past them never near his face. It didnt last for ever though. A couple of nights back, watch TV in the dark, Luna, our Border Collie puppy peed on the rug, put the light on cleaned up, sat back down, then there was a blood curdling scream, from Hubby just near where I had been kneeling was a you-know-what, the size of a dinner plate. I screamed second on seeing it, he exited it with my shorthand notebook.
I loathe spiders, luckily I have three cats who eat any they find indoors. I leave the outdoor ones alone and just try and avoid them.
I wasnt brought up o hate or fear spiders, my lat Mother used to happily pick them up. I dont know where it came from. I am very claustrophobic, my Hubby has Agorophobia, Zenophobia and Sociaphobia, I think everyone is afraid of something.Ou daughter is terrified of bees, (I love them) wasps, her big strapping boyfriend is terrified of Butterflies.
I'm not sure you can pass phobias to your children.
I have no problem with spiders but both my children (28 & 29 plus a strapping 6' 4" daughters boyfriend) are terrified!
My fear is worms but my kids can pick them up with no worries
I love the webs, especially at this time of the year, when they are all wet. We have a lot of the "False Widows" in the conservatory where I am now, they make messy webs, I was sitting with my Grandson, I saw a large Bumble Bee lad on one, be the time I had got out of my seat, the spider had rushed out, and got the bee, incredible speed. Garden wise, I hate ants, but, I am alergic to their bites, last time I was bitten on my calf, my leg blew up like a balloon, thought I had a DVT, the Dr had a look with a torch and found the bite mark, so I give them a wide berth!
The spider in the lounge 2 nights ago, was at least 4 times my size!
Jam jar or glass with a piece of card to slide in. Then you can watch them and get a good close lookmif, like me you just don't like touching or being surprised by them. I'm trying (have been for years, but not very enthusiastically) to acclimatise myself with little ones outside.
True arachnophobia, like other phobias, I suspect, is relatively rare.
Love you jo47, thats exactly how my face looked when I saw the spider!
