Sowing grass seed in stony soil

  • Just wondering if there was a update. I’ve only just realised this was from 2015.I’ve literally just done the same to my lawn, so much gravel and I’ve gotten rid of two or three full wheel barrows. My brother in law designed this garden sieve so I’ve been using that to filter out some stones but it’s endless. There are still a lot on the top but after stamping them all down and then raking seeding and stamping down again this is what it looks like.

Just an update as to what I’ve done so far. Raked over it all to get the soil fluffy, a few more stones than what I would’ve liked - poor lawnmower  will update in a few weeks time

Hi @ardevilliers. I'm so sorry for my extreme delay in replying but I've just been checking through old emails and found a couple of old unread ones from the forum to let me know a thread of mine had been posted in, including this one.

From the photos it looks like you prepared your ground much better than we did. I raked across the new lawn area a couple of times I think, and you can still see lots of stones left on the ground in the earlier photos, although I don't think they were ever an issue once the grass grew - they seemed to disappear. I tried my best with the heeling but I'm not sure I ever got it completely level. We did get grass growing up but we made the mistake of still walking across the space as we were trying to do things like make flowerbeds at the same time - very stupid I know and it resulted in patchy areas of grass.

So our lawn area is not the greatest and we're currently overhauling the garden, with the idea of levelling the lawn area later in the year, and then either overseeding or returfing it. I think a main issue for us is we could have done with digging out the area and getting out any rubbish/rubble we found before even considering seeding. I've been extending flowerbeds this last week and have been doing the proper dig down to 2 spades depth, or at least 1.5 where it was tougher to dig, and removing anything I could find - including bits of old concrete paths well under the grass level. Ideally we'd do this in the lawn area when we get to that job but it's taken a long time to work through what I've done so far with the flowerbeds, and there's plenty more to go, so I don't know whether we'll find we can or not. The reason I'd like to do so is to improve drainage further and make sure the soil underneath isn't too much of solid lumps of clay.

I hope that you ended up with a lovely lawn after all of your hard work.

    Lucid :)
